Room is unlivable on move-in day - exposed wiring and hidden door!

Just got to my new place in London Ontario for move in (supposed to be today at noon). Found exposed electrical outlets hanging from wall, broken furniture everywhere, and get this - a hidden door to another unit behind a wardrobe! The place looked fine when i viewed it with LL’s daughter last month. Haven’t moved anything in yet but already paid first and last months rent. What are my options?? This cant be legal right?

This is completely unacceptable and likely violates building codes. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Document EVERYTHING with photos and videos
  2. Contact the LL in writing (email/text) describing all issues
  3. The exposed electrical outlet is a serious safety hazard
  4. You can refuse to take possession due to uninhabitable conditions
  5. File a T6 with the LTB for the return of your deposit

The unit must be in a livable condition on move-in day. The LL can’t force you to accept an unsafe unit.

mayb try talking to the LL first? they might fix it quick

LL just texted back saying ‘you saw the unit during viewing and agreed to rent it as is’ which is NOT true! The place was in way better shape then.

That’s a terrible response from the LL. The unit must be in habitable condition regardless of what you saw. The exposed wiring alone makes it unsafe and likely illegal to occupy. Contact bylaw enforcement immediately and file a property standards complaint. Keep all communication with LL in writing. You have strong grounds to break the lease.
