Is my electrical panel 100 or 200 amp? Confused about ratings

Hey everyone, I’m a bit confused about the electrical panel in my rental. The meter outside says 200Amp, but inside the utility room, the panel shows 100 + 100 amp for shutoff. Can someone explain if this means it’s actually 200 amp or just 100 amp? I’m thinking about adding some appliances and want to make sure I won’t overload anything.

u shud probly ask an electrician, this is more of a landlord/tenant forum tbh

While it’s true that an electrician would be the best person to consult, I can provide some general information. What you’re describing sounds like a 100 amp service at 240V. The two 100 amp breakers you see are likely for each 120V leg of the service. Together, they provide 100 amps at 240V.

The 200 amp rating on the meter might be its maximum capacity, not necessarily what’s currently installed for your unit. However, without seeing it in person, it’s hard to say for certain.

Why do u even care? 100amp is plenty unless ur mining bitcoin or sumthin lol

I’m actually considering adding an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) to the property, that’s why I’m concerned about the amperage.

Adding an ADU is a significant change and might require upgrades to your electrical system. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. 100 amp service can be sufficient for many homes, even with an ADU, but it depends on the specific appliances and usage.

  2. You’ll need to calculate the total electrical load for both the main house and the ADU.

  3. Local building codes may require a certain amperage for ADUs.

  4. It’s crucial to consult with a licensed electrician and check local regulations before proceeding.

  5. Your LL needs to be involved in this process as it’s a major modification to the property.

Remember, electrical work for an ADU isn’t a DIY project. Safety should be your top priority.
